My Thoughts - vs. Flyers (L 3-2) 10/29/10

-What a sloppy game. It basically had zero flow. The first about 7-8 minutes was the most bizarre hockey we’ve seen all  season and probably will see all season.

-Before I get into anything else, please don’t blame Fleury for this loss. None of the goals were his fault. The team in front of him played a pretty bad game tonight.

-You know, everyone talks about this goalie Bob. He was pretty lucky on a lot of saves tonight. I’m almost glad they didn’t go in, though. The Pens didn’t deserve to win this game by any means.

-The Flyers defense played very well tonight, actually. We should give them credit, but the Pens effort was inexcusable.

-The whole team came up with a very lackluster effort tonight. Period 1 was pretty good, but it was absolute laziness from then on.

-With the way he played tonight, Sid probably wouldn’t be the first player I talk about. However this comment, which came after the TK goal, from Seth at EN got me going: “It’s nice [Crosby] decided to show up finally tonight.”
Huh? Sid had just an ok game, yes, but he’s the last person we should be frustrated with right now. He’s played well in every single game for the past couple weeks; I think we can let this one off game slide. His teammates should be able to compensate for one off game. I mean, he wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t good either. The Flyers wouldn’t let him go to the net and played him tightly, so he passed a lot. That led to some good chances but his line mates couldn’t bury them. They’re the ones who need to get going when Sid is off/the D is playing him well. And, no, I’m not blaming Sid’s line-mates for his off game tonight. Sid didn’t play well, but his line mates played much worse than he did; which isn’t going to work when the Flyers decide to actually do a good job of boxing Crosby out for once.

-Geno is also one of the guys that needs to step it up when Sid has an off game. Better yet, he need s to step it up period. He’s had what maybe one game where he was consistent throughout the whole game? It’s time to get it going, Geno.  Besides a few good plays in the 1st, you were pretty invisible out there. On another note, I really hope he’s not injured because him missing games is one of the last things we need right now. Update: Bylsma said Malkin left the game with an “unspecified injury.” Uh oh.

-How about Letang? I expected a big year out of him and he’s delivered so far. I don’t know if I can say that his shot is improved all that much from last year, but his defense is 10x better plus he’s being a little more physical. As a whole, he’s just a more dynamic player than he was last year. Boy does he look good right now.

-Everyone was pretty much put forward their lackluster efforts forward tonight.

-The PP was terrible for the first few tries. Then, somehow, in the 3rd , they look much better. We know they know how to conduct a PP, as they’ve been very good during portions of the year. I can see how the PP might struggle at first with aggressive PKs, but the laziness and the nonchalant attitude is unacceptable.

-I noticed Comrie out there tonight. That doesn’t mean he had a good game, though. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: he’s a good player, he’s a smart player, but he’s just to slow to keep up with this team. It’s unfortunate but true. If he doesn’t start producing, he’ll get waived, picked up by another hockey team, and more than likely have pretty good success with that team. He just doesn’t fit here.

-The more I see Engelland out on the ice, the more I like the way he plays. He absolutely wrecked Shelley tonight. Lovejoy has played almost as good, if not just as good, but Engelland brings a whole new dimension that the Pens are lacking. He’s making it pretty tough for the coaches to find a reason to sit him once Michalek comes back.

-Just in case you didn’t know or forgot, the Richards-Cooke fight was instigated by these post game comments. So, Mikey, when did Sid fight Carcillo?

-As I said before, the role players need to get going. Right now, the Pens offense is a couple of defenseman, Sid, Geno, and maybe Letestu. That needs to change and don’t tell me that we don’t have formidable wingers. I’ve seen our role players play well and they are not playing anywhere near that.

-You’ve got to think that the Pens will come out with guns blazing in Carolina tomorrow night. That could make this goalie situation even more complicated as BJ will more than likely get the start tomorrow because of games on consecutive days.

- Even though DB said that the Pens are still trying to find their identity, but there’s no excuse not to show up tomorrow night. That is all.
