My Thoughts - at Carolina (W 3-0) 10/30/10

-What an all-around team effort tonight and what a difference 24 hours makes. Down their best winger and playing half the game without their best defenseman, the Pens had their first complete 60 minute effort in my mind.

-What a game by Brent Johnson. Can we not talk about the current goaltender “situation” for at least tonight? Beej deserves to be the only one mentioned tonight. He’s just playing so solid right now; he made some fantastic saves. The man is on fire.

-Pascal Dupuis and Max Talbot. I wondered where our role players were last night and boy did these two guys deliver. Both guys were all speed and work tonight. They exemplified DB’s system to perfection in this game, including on the PK. Stick tap to both of these guys.

-The refs made more than a few ticky tack calls on the Pens tonight. That’s three straight games where that’s happened. What’s going on?

-Want to know why Sidney Crosby is the best player in the game? We all could see he was laboring a bit out there, yet he lays out and blocks a shot (in a 2-0 game) then sets up the 2nd Duper goal, all in the same play. Furthermore, he won a staggering 72% of his faceoffs, was buzzing around the net all night, made tape to tape passes, and has 5 shots on goal. Great game by Sid with Geno out.

-What a warrior Letang was for the first two periods. He really tried to get it done and he played well, but he just couldn’t go on. Hope to see him back for the Dallas game on Wed.

-What a great job by the other 5 D-men to pick up the slack tonight. Johnson had a stellar game, but it wouldn’t have been as great without our defense playing so well. Every single one of those guys made a positive difference out there.

-Once again, the more I see of Engelland, the more I like him. I just don’t see how he gets scratched when we have 7 healthy defensemen.

-It’s not like Lovejoy isn’t playing well; he’s been playing great, but Engo is playing out of his mind right now. I will say this: the one knock I have on Lovejoy is that he has a habit of letting forwards blow by him on a rush to the net. He got burned by St. Louis for a goal a few days ago and he got burned again by a Carolina player late in the 3rd tonight. Luckily, his defensive partner bailed him out.

-After having a handful of off games, Paul Martin was back to his usual form tonight.

-You know it was a total team effort when Geno is out and Sid only gets 18 minutes of ice time. All four lines played great tonight.

-What more can I say? The whole team played really well, it was probably their best game of the season; I don’t really have any complaints.
